Brooklyn Funk Essentials put in a mighty fine and solid performance in front of their loyal followers and fans. The sound was particularly good too.The spacious environs of the Forge seemed preferable to the cramped Jazz Cafe, (both Camden venues) where they last played.
Let's face it, playing at Ronnie Scott's is not a given. I've seen many an act try too hard and fall flat on their face. You can't just go steaming in, you have to work the room just a little and suss out the crowd before you fully unleash yourself.
I was both chuffed and thrilled to be back in front of a live band again and who better to see than these guys? Across a career that stretches 25 years, Brooklyn Funk Essentials have established themselves as a unique project fusing soul, hip hop, ragga, spoken word, jazz and, of course, da funk!
Brooklyn Funk Essentials now there's a name I've not heard bandied about for a while,in fact I'm surprised they are still around but judging by their rather perky new album,I'm glad they are.
