An easy, intimate show, with a Left Bank vibe

Some artists, like Ella Fitzgerald or Keb’ Mo’ sound just as good in a studio recording as they do in a live concert. American jazz and blues singer-songwriter Madeleine Peyroux (pronounced Peru) not only sounds just as good on stage, but she also gives a brilliant performance.

Madeleine Peyroux closed out this leg of her Careless Love Forever Tour in grand style at Auckland’s regal Holy Trinity Cathedral.

Madeleine Peyroux is an American jazz singer who has plied her trade in the Parisian Latin Quarter and last night she brought all of these years of singing and playing alongside the genre's finest musicians to Nottingham's Glee Club on the first of only two UK dates.

Covered by the BBC, there is an air of musical quality about the place, accompanied by the delicious aroma of varied cuisines from the surrounding food stalls.

At times early on this famously private artist looked as unguarded as if she had just dropped into a rehearsal; at others she tugged nervously at her clothes as if awaiting an audition.
