Roosting on the art-installation-bedecked upper levels of Peckham’s multistorey car park Bold Tendencies feels like a slightly overstated outtake from Chris Morris’s mid-00s hipster prophesy Nathan Barley.
Since dazzling audiences and critics alike with her 2009 debut Jewellery Levi has consistently rewritten the rules of pop with Micachu & The Shapes’ off-kilter melodies unpredictable rhythms deliberate distortion and unlikely instrumentation.
It's been three years since second album ‘Never' (during which time Mica Levi earned a Bafta nod for scoring 2013 sci-fi horror Under The Skin) and a sold out Soup Kitchen crowd are eager for new songs.
Her unique brand of high-brow lo-fi songs are alienating enough to keep mainstream appeal at bay but on a rainy weekyday night at the newly revamped XOYO a stone’s throw from the unlovable Old Street roundabout they make complete sense.
Kicking off the evening in the ICA was Alessi’s Ark whose mix of West Coast folk and English pastoralism has been attracting next-big-thing buzz of late.
