Orchestra Baobab were the heroes of the Dakar dance scene back in the 70s until their lilting fusion of West African and Cuban styles was overtaken by the furious mbalax of Youssou N’Dour.
Baloji has spent much of his life in Belgium but returned to Congo to record his album Kinshasa Succursale in which rousing local musicians such as Konono No 1 worked alongside him.
Founded as the house band at Dakar's Club Baobab in 1970 and idle between 1985 and 2002 Orchestra Baobab blend Afro-Cuban rumba pachanga and salsa Senegalese griots (praise singers) American soul jazz and West African mbalax and soukous music.
And judging by their joyous performance at The Roundhouse last week, it’s not a second coming these exceptional musicians are going to lightly pass up.
