Jay Farrar is a man of few words and fewer smiles, but he seemed to be in good spirits when he took the stage at Portland, Oregon’s Aladdin Theater on Friday, June 10th.
Politics are almost inherent, if not overt, when bands play in the Washington, D.C., area. I can't tell you how many times I've heard 1960s protest songs played — often with an extra dose of passion — as encores at shows.
In these charged times, Son Volt made it clear where it was coming from on the opening song, The 99. The title, of course, refers to the rest of us who aren't flush with cash.
