Get the Blessing (previously known as The Blessing) are a jazz rock quartet based in Bristol, England, active since 2000. They were formed when Jim Barr (bass) and Clive Deamer (drums), the rhythm section from the trip hop group Portishead, teamed up with Jake McMurchie (saxophone) and Pete Judge (trumpet) over their mutual appreciation of Ornette Coleman.
The quartet emerged in 2000 hitching the rhythmic engine of West Country trip-hoppers Portishead (bass guitarist Jim Barr and drummer CDeamer) to the improv and harmonies of musicians Pete Judge (trumpet) and Jake McMurchie (sax).
Singer/songwriter Sarah Gillespie was anything but cool however on a rousing opening set shared with Get the Blessing that was a long way from the work of a support act.
If anyone at the same venue happened to be recording the recent performance by the young Manchester orchestra Beats and Pieces the results will almost certainly be greeted with a similar awe two decades on.
It’s Sunday night at Colston Hall’s annex venue The Lantern and Get The Blessing are here to present their new (fifth) album ‘Astronautilus’ to the Bristol public.
Under hazy purple lights, masters of experimental jazz rock Get The Blessing return to Bristol tonight, for the official launch party of their hotly anticipated new album, Astronautilus.
